A Warm Welcome to the New Spring Semester!
|
|
Dear College of Engineering Community,
Happy New Year! As we embark on a new semester, I hope each of you had a restful break and returned with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the exciting journey ahead.
The College's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team is thrilled to welcome back our engineering students, faculty, and staff. This semester promises to be filled with engaging events and celebrations that underscore our commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse community.
To kick things off, we're starting with the Out in STEM (oSTEM) Banquet, an early celebration of Pride Month in June. We recognize that many of our students may not be on campus during June, so we're bringing the festivities a bit earlier. It's an opportunity to come together, celebrate diversity, and build connections within our community.
As we move forward, Black History Month in February will be a collaborative effort with the UGA National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Together, we'll honor the achievements and contributions of Black individuals in engineering and beyond.
In March, our College chapter of the Society of Women in Engineering (SWE) will be at the forefront of celebrating Women's History Month. We'll acknowledge the accomplishments of women in engineering and inspire the next generation of trailblazers.
April will see the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) hosting a dinner to commemorate Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month. It is an opportunity to share stories, foster understanding, and celebrate the rich cultural tapestry within our College. Throughout the semester, we will be sharing information about these events, so stay tuned for details on how you can participate and contribute.
Additionally, the DEI College Committee is hard at work with the Climate Survey, aiming to provide recommendations and implement positive changes. Your input is invaluable, and we encourage everyone to stay engaged as we work together to make our College an even more inclusive and welcoming place.
Wishing you all a fantastic start to the semester, filled with learning, growth, and meaningful connections.

Important Notice: UGA Policy Regarding Service and Emotional Support Animals
|
|
Dear Engineering Community,
As we embark on the new semester, we would like to remind everyone of the University of Georgia's commitment to maintaining a fair and respectful environment for all individuals, including those with disabilities. In alignment with federal and state laws, UGA has established a policy providing guidelines and permitted uses of animals assisting individuals with disabilities while on UGA property.
For detailed information, we encourage you to review the comprehensive policy available at UGA Animal Policy. It covers general guidelines and essential details regarding the presence of service and emotional support animals on campus.
Here are a few key points to keep in mind:
- Service Animal Interaction: Please be aware that service animals cannot be touched or petted. These animals play a crucial role in assisting individuals with disabilities, and it is essential to respect their working status.
- Limited Questions: In accordance with the policy, there are limited inquiries allowed to the service animal owner. We kindly ask everyone to be mindful of this limitation and respect the privacy of individuals utilizing service animals.
Understanding and adhering to these guidelines contribute to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone in our engineering community. If you have any questions or require additional information, please visit UGA Animal Policy - Service Animal Guidelines.
Thank you for your cooperation in fostering a supportive and accessible community for all.

March 25–27, 2024
New York, N.Y.
The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Conference is the can’t-miss event of 2024, taking place March 25–27 in New York City.
The conference will highlight a diverse selection of topics, from admissions to institutional accessibility and across functional areas. The program will be released soon, but here are a few highlights of what you can expect:
•
HBCU Myth Versus Fact: Learn more about the unique experiences students have at HBCUs. Join this session for real talk about attending these historic institutions, and ask the experts about what HBCUs do to change students’ lives.
•
Transforming Belonging Through Technology at HBCUs: Learn how the power of human-centered technology can enhance the impactful HBCU experience. This session explores early findings within a multi-institution cohort and amplifies candid reflections on thoughtful and strategic implementation to support a sense of belonging through technology. Digital engagement and AI/chatbot platforms and services show results in yield and retention that far exceed typical experiences and outcomes at non-HBCUs.
•
From Recruitment to Enrollment: A Case Study on Data: The last four admissions cycles since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic have been a roller coaster! While some institutions experienced record growth in applications and increased enrollment, some have seen a drop in both. Whatever the situation on your campus, in this session, you’ll learn how one of your esteemed peers used historical admissions data to understand their recruitment-to-enrollment pipeline so that they could be more strategic about building their first-year class.
